Flooding

Coastal communities are concerned about the vulnerability of properties, buildings, roadways, bridges, and other infrastructure as they continue to face floods brought on by storms and rising sea levels.

8.6 million Americans live in areas vulnerable to significant coastal flooding. As this number continues to grow, new development sites will only be sustainable if they either avoid areas at high risk or consider effective flood mitigation strategies for future flooding.

The vulnerability of roads and bridges determines much of the vulnerability of all forms of infrastructure, as well as the effectiveness of response strategies like evacuation and remediation.

RISCC Objective 2 assesses our partner communities’ flood vulnerability and viable strategies for flood mitigation, providing local decision-makers with detailed data and projections that inform how they can best prevent the worst impacts of flooding events.

Research Impacts

  • Create projections of coastal flooding impacts for community coastal planning and decision-making.
  • Evaluate potential damages and economic losses for varying flood intensities.
  • Identify suitable flood mitigation strategies for selected sites.
