Decision Making

Local leaders consider many factors when making coastal adaptation decisions, including community opinion, economic impact, environmental benefit, and leaders’ own knowledge and personal views.

Tools that help best prepare for and communicate the urgency of coastal climate hazards are often not available to decision makers. A recent study found that less than 5% of relevant assessments consider multiple hazards.

Providing comprehensive, research-backed resources helps emergency managers, local planners, and others make long-term adaptation decisions that best suit their community’s needs and values.

RISCC Objective 6 helps develop decision support systems and resources, strengthening the decision-making process for communities increasing their resilience to flooding and salinization.
